Tennis Club
The Tennis Courts attached to Highfield Road Uniting Church have provided a point of social contact for the members of the church for over 70 years. The tennis club was primarily used on Saturday and a large number of the church community have supported the club over the years. Some of the members have played an active role in the club for over 40 years, although many are more recent members of the church community.
The Saturday group play round robin, where the ladies and men are mixed after each set, some mixed, some men's and some ladies sets. All adult members are invited to join us for this social tennis and afternoon tea. Midweek groups are active, with a Tuesday morning ladies group and Wednesday morning mixed group.
The courts have been used for coaching of juniors for many years. The current coach, Joanne O'Donaghue, has access to the courts on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, from 3.45 till 5.15. She has a waiting list of students wanting to improve their tennis skills. You can contact Joanne on 0408 537 662 to see if she has a vacancy.
Tennis Club membership has changed over recent years, with an increase in community members having access to the courts. Highfield Road Uniting Church supports this and it is seen as an outreach opportunity by the church in supporting healthy activity in the community.
A maintenance man maintains the tennis courts regularly, although all members are required to assist in the maintenance of the courts through the wearing of appropriate tennis shoes, watering and sweeping the courts. The gates are secured through a combination lock, the number of which is provided to the members on paying their annual subscription.
